Dartmouth Health is getting a $4 million grant to support families and young people impacted by substance use disorder and mental health.Representatives from Dartmouth Health said they’d be increasing access to mental health care in particularly rural parts of New Hampshire. They said the federal money from this grant will be used to treat and deliver services in Grafton, Sullivan and Cheshire counties. The grant awarded by the Health Resources and Service Administration will help address child behavioral health needs in those communities. Dartmouth was one of nine grantees across the country and the only one in New England. They’re focusing on bettering mental health treatment in schools and primary care settings.Officials said that’s because they believe those are the best places to reach children who may be dealing with substance use or mental health disorders. They plan to create new prevention treatment services and help train clinical staff.Dartmouth will also be working with a local podcast to help highlight the voices of youth and caregivers with lived experiences in these areas.“We’re also thinking about how to leverage some of the person power on this grant to some of the providers and we have a peer support position on this grant as well, and how can we help meet the need and increase engagement of some of these children and families through these more nontraditional methods,” said Dr. Kay Jankowski with Dartmouth Health.Jankowski said Dartmouth Health won’t be working alone to provide the mental health care needed in these rural counties. She said they’ve reached out to school districts and other agencies in those communities to gauge the kind of help that’s needed the most.
