On Thursday, March 27, Jackson Walker senior counsel Demi Williams Coles took part in an inspiring all-women fireside chat in celebration of Women’s History Month. Hosted by the SMU Dedman Sports and Entertainment Law Association and Fisher Phillips, the event brought together leading female attorneys in the sports industry to share their stories, career advice, and insights.

Demi Williams Coles was joined by Jessica Presnall (Big 12 Conference) and Naima Starks (Stinson), with the discussion moderated by Adam Sloustcher (Fisher Phillips). The panelists delved into a range of topics, from overcoming the unique challenges faced by female lawyers in the sports sector to the most pressing issues they are currently tackling in their professional roles.

Key themes included the importance of relationship building and following one’s passions within the broad range of opportunities at the nexus of sports and the law. The panelists emphasized the principles of following up and practicing authenticity in building relationships as essential strategies for career advancement. They also explored the future of sports and the business opportunities it presents, as well as ways to promote the advancement of female lawyers within the industry.

Meet Demi

Demi Williams Coles is a senior counsel in the Trial & Appellate Litigation section at Jackson Walker. Practicing in our Entertainment, Digital, and Sports group, Demi’s matters have involved athlete name, image, and likeness (NIL), athlete eligibility, defamation, music publishing rights, and more. Prior to Jackson Walker, Demi served as a litigator and prosecutor and, to date, has successfully tried more than 20 cases in state and federal court. Outside of the law, Demi has worked in various capacities within the sports industry, including currently as a speaker to student-athletes and coaches.
