
NEW ULM–Denise C. Barnes, age 70 of New Ulm, Minn. died peacefully Friday, November 17, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Arlington, Minn.
A celebration of life visitation will be held 3-6 p.m. Sunday, November 26th, 2023, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home-South Chapel in New Ulm, Minn..

Denise is survived by her son, Trinity Horstman of Norwood Young America, Minn.; her daughter, Rachael (Darrel) Frauendienst of Gaylord, Minn.; her son, Justin (Charity) Horstman of Gaylord, Minn.; her grandchildren, Trystan Horstman, Peyton Lightfoot, Austin (Kelly) Frauendienst, Amber (Mitchel) Wentzlaff, Alex (special friend Emily Tuchtenhagen) Frauendienst, Lucas (Sarah) Rognli, Mason Horstman, Gage Horstman, Mara Horstman; her great-grandchildren, Elodie Wentzlaff, Emmeline Rognli; her mother-in-law, Sylvia Barnes of New Ulm, Minn.; her siblings, Ramona (Dave Harris) Anderson of Bonita Springs, Fla., Julaine Markquart of Fairmont,Minn., Matt (Barb) Olson of Rochester,Minn., Jan Mills Aspholm of Boone, Iowa, Glen (Elizabeth) Olson of Heber, Ariz., Lyle (Judi) Olson of Eden Prairie, Minn., Joy Dillon of Fairmont, Minn., Shireen (Michael) Toutant of Freeport, Maine, Craig (Pam) Olson and Doreen (Mike) Malone of Fairmont, Minn., Leann (Ted) Bach of Wellington, Fla., Lori Mau of North Pole, Alaska; her sisters-in-law, Ann (Mark) Overby of The Villages, Fla., Rachel (Mike) Betts of Kent, Wash.; her brother-in-law, Tim (Laurie) Barnes of Federal Way, Wash.; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Ruby Olson; her father-in-law, Glenn Barnes; her husband, Steve “Barney” Barnes; sister, Marlene Naylor; her brothers-in-law, HA Saggau, Duane Petschke, WT Aspholm, Orv Anderson, Wayne Marquart and Joe Dillon.
Denise Charnell Olson was born number 10 of 14 children of Alfred and Ruby (Teig) Olson on August 6, 1953 in Fairmont, Minn. Denise grew up in Ceylon, Hector, and Hutchinson, and eventually was a 1972 graduate from Fairmont High School. She married Roger Horstman on August 23, 1972. This union blessed the couple with three children, Trinity, Rachael and Justin. Roger and Denise resided in rural Arlington until Denise and Roger divorced. Denise moved to New Ulm, where she met Steven “Barney” Barnes. The couple was united in marriage on June 7, 1997. They were able to enjoy 13 years together before Steve’s unexpected death on October 20, 2010. Denise had many jobs throughout her life including secretary, bartender, road constructionand forklift operator before she settled into her career as a receptionist at Alliance Bank where she worked for 23 years before retiring in 2018. Besides her work, Denise enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, traveling, gardening and even cooking treats for her “elevator guys” that always watched over her too. Denise was a member of the New Ulm American Legion Auxiliary and Redeemer Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Blessed be her memory.
