Department invests in faculty wellness with “Mental Health in May” event

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Social and Behavioral Service Department of Jackson put on a district-wide “Mental Health in May” event here in the Hub City.

This month is all about taking care of your mental health where it meets your needs most, and the SBSD offers the Jackson-Madison County School District a variety of unique activities for staff members to participate in at the Mental Health in May experience.

“We’re definitely going to have–So, sections and areas to where they can learn to meditate if they have never done it before. Aroma therapy, relaxation tips, also they’re going to have gift bags that’s going to have tips for children, as well as for the adults, as far as anxiety and stress and how to relieve it,” said Rhonda Bigham, director of Social and Behavioral Services.

Dr. Shalonda Franklin explains that the prevalence of mental health is just as important for adults as it is for children.

“Our staff and our adults, a lot of the time in the school system, they seem to get overlooked because we are focused on the students and with our department we focus on both. And, so, today’s event is– Is just that. To focus on the mental health of the adults,” said Franklin.

This event supports superintendent Dr. Marlon King’s “We Care” act that highlights employee wellness programs that help individuals serve our community better.

“Dr. King through many of his initiatives, especially through We Care, for an employee– really stresses the importance of your health and your well-being,” said Jodi Joyner, chief communications and executive support officer.

Keeping a check on your mental health is important to alleviate potential health concerns.

It’s also beneficial to know your resources, whether that be a therapist, counselor, or crisis outreach that’s available in your community.
