Deputies chase stolen car in La Quinta, then capture suspect in resident’s backyard

Sheriff’s deputies captured two people Friday morning in La Quinta after they chased a stolen car and surrounded two people who’d jumped out of it and run. While deputies were looking for the suspects, residents were advised to stay in their homes.

At 7:51 a.m., deputies with an auto-theft detail found a wanted vehicle in the 79-000 block of Highway 111 in La Quinta. They tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled “a short distance” before two people got out and ran, according to a press release from the sheriff’s department.

The suspects fled south into nearby neighborhoods. With help from a sheriff’s department helicopter, deputies tracked the man who’d been driving the vehicle into the backyard of a La Quinta home on the 79000 block of Shadow Trail, where they set up a perimeter.

“In an abundance of caution, while deputies searched for the suspects, the Riverside Sheriff’s helicopter made announcements for the residents to shelter in place until the search was complete,” the department said Friday afternoon.

With help from a special K9 unit, deputies located the driver inside a small storage building. They said they arrested 36-year-old Patrick Duran of Coachella without further incident and booked him at the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio later Friday morning.

Jail records show Duran was booked on suspicion of vehicle theft and possession of a stolen vehicle. He was being held later Friday on $150,000 bail.

The sheriff’s department said the person who’d been the passenger in the stolen vehicle was detained after being located outside of the perimeter, but the department did not identify that person or say whether they were ultimately arrested.
