Detached car tire causes deadly crash on I-94

ANN ARBOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WILX) – One person is dead after a tire detached from a car and hit a passing vehicle on I-94 in Washtenaw County.

On Tuesday, April 2, at 4 p.m. Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers were called out to the area of I-94 near State Street in Ann Arbor Township for a car crash.

MSP said a car was being driven by a 38-year-old man from Jackson on westbound I-94 when his front driver’s side tire detached from the car and flew over the median wall, hitting another car heading eastbound on I-94.

According to MSP, the tire hit the car on the driver’s side windshield, causing the roof to cave in and hit the driver in the head.

The driver of the eastbound car was a 49-year-old man from Dearborn Heights, who officials said died on the scene.

An investigation is ongoing.
