Detroit’s Spinners entering Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tops busy music weekend

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is making its 38th annual induction ceremony available to more than just those in attendance in Brooklyn or SiriusXM subscribers.

This year’s event — inducting Detroit’s own Spinners among others — will be broadcast in real-time at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, via Disney+, where it will live on for repeating viewings afterward.

ABC, meanwhile, will broadcast a three-hour special of ceremony highlights at 8 p.m. on Jan. 1.

It’s not the first time this has happened; the cable outlet Fuse carried the 2009 ceremony live. But in recent years, it’s been filmed by HBO and aired within a month or so of the original date.

Henry Fambrough, 85, the Spinners’ sole surviving (and retired) original member, says that the honor, after three previous nominations “feels great.”

“It’s a pleasure being selected like this,” he said. “We’ve been in this position over years and years. … At least you know someone is thinking about you.”

Finally getting the nod, Fambrough adds: “Really is a great honor. I just wish the other guys were here to see it.”

The Spinners, who recorded for Motown before scoring the bulk of its hits with Atlantic Records during the ’70s, will be inducted along with Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, Rage Against the Machine, Kate Bush and the late George Michael in the performer category.

DJ Kool Herc and Link Wray will receive awards for musical influence, while Elton John’s lyricist Bernie Taupin, Chaka Khan and Al Kooper will be honored with awards for musical excellence. “Soul Train” host Don Cornelius receives the Ahmet Ertegun Award for nonperformers.

Crow, Elliott, Nelson and Khan are slated to perform during the ceremony, along with Stevie Nicks, Adam Levine, Carrie Underwood, Common, Miguel and Sia will perform during the Nov. 3 event at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The presenters’ list includes Elton John, Ice-T, LL Cool J, Queen Latifah, Elton John, Brandi Carlile, Chris Stapleton, Dave Matthews, H.E.R., New Edition and St. Vincent.

More information about the ceremony and the class of 2023 can be found via rockhall.org.
