NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford is all set to ignite with creativity in 2025 after 31 grants were awarded by New Bedford Creative at the New Bedford Economic Development Council (NBEDC).

With projects funded through the “Art is Everywhere!” and “Wicked Cool Places” grant programs, the city is poised to strengthen its reputation as a vibrant arts hub.

“The creativity and dedication of New Bedford’s arts and cultural leaders continue to enrich our city,” said Anthony Sapienza, president of New Bedford Economic Development Council. “These grant programs help ensure that the arts remain an integral part of our community’s identity, fostering engagement, education, and a deep sense of place for all who live and visit here.”

Here’s a sneak peek at five thrilling events that will transform the cultural landscape of New Bedford.

Soul on the Move: Pop-up concerts and dance parties

Get ready to groove! Oversoul Theatre Collective, a first-time grant recipient, brings “Soul on the Move” to life. This dynamic project, rooted in Wampanoag traditions, is set to create a buzz across Old Bedford Village, Buttonwood Park, Fort Rodman, and more.

Experience pop-up performances featuring live music, spoken word, and underground dance parties combining funk, soul, jazz, and Indigenous sounds. Powered by solar energy, this initiative not only reclaims public spaces but also champions cultural identity and ecological responsibility.

SuperART: Achieving real transformation

The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center, in collaboration with NorthStar Learning Center, presents “SuperART” – a transformative program for youth aged 10-14. This after-school initiative utilizes visual and performing arts to offer emotional healing and self-expression.

From creating superhero characters to painting community murals, participants will overcome challenges like trauma and poverty while building resilience. This program promises to empower New Bedford’s youth, fostering community connection and thriving futures.

Ship Shape II: A nautical art exhibition

Set sail at Gallery X with “Ship Shape II,” an exhibition featuring artwork crafted from materials salvaged from the historic Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey. This showcase will highlight marine-themed art alongside performances, film screenings, and storytelling events.

Capturing the essence of New Bedford’s maritime heritage, this exhibition invites all to explore the rich history and artistic innovation anchored in the city.

Being Seen: Celebrating SouthCoast Pride

Experience art and technology colliding at “Being Seen,” an interactive light sculpture by Iranian-born artist Mona Ghandi. Presented by DATMA, this 20-foot by 20 foot installation will illuminate the intersection of Union Street and Route 18, inviting public interaction and transformation.

Running from June to October, the sculpture will engage the community in educational initiatives, creating a bridge between the waterfront and city life, and sparking conversation in our post-pandemic world.

Juneteenth: Celebrating our cultures and our stories

Celebrate diversity and resilience at Abolition Row Park with a vibrant Juneteenth event hosted by the New Bedford Historical Society. This cultural gathering will honor the histories of African American, Cape Verdean, West Indian, and Native American communities.

Through music, spoken word, and art, the event will amplify Black and Latino youth voices, fostering community engagement and social change. It’s a tribute to the city’s rich cultural tapestry and a testament to its inclusive spirit.

New Bedford Creative awards 31 grants total

An independent committee of New Bedford residents and community groups reviewed and selected the grant recipients based on criteria including project quality, community impact, artistic excellence, strength of partnerships, and budget feasibility.

With these incredible events on the horizon, New Bedford is set to embrace its role as an arts and culture powerhouse in 2025. These projects, celebrating diversity and creativity, promise to leave a lasting impact on the community and beyond.
