Just one week after its season finale, Disney+ has officially ordered a second season of its smash series Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
The statement, announced by CEO Bob Iger during Disney’s last quarterly earnings call, affirms the show’s success and offers hope to both demigods and mortals.
Season 1, which debuted in December 2023, rapidly won viewers’ hearts with its faithful rendition of Rick Riordan’s popular book series. The story of Percy Jackson, a youthful demigod who discovers his Olympian heritage and starts on a journey to recover Zeus’ lost lightning bolt, captivated viewers new and old to the Percy Jackson universe.
The renewal is unsurprising given the outstanding viewership statistics. According to Variety, the pilot episode drew over 13 million viewers in its first six days on Disney+ and Hulu.
Season 1 has apparently been streamed for over 110 million hours across both platforms, resulting in around 20.6 million total views. These figures clearly demonstrate the show’s popularity and Disney’s belief in its potential.
Fans can expect the second season to continue the plot from The Sea of Monsters, the second novel in the Percy Jackson series. Author Rick Riordan, who is intimately engaged in the show’s production, hinted to it on social media, stating, “All hands on deck, demigods.” “We’re heading for the Sea of Monsters!”
Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri will return to play Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, and Grover Underwood, respectively. While no official release date has been announced, production is set to begin later this year.
