Does Ken Have to Take a Back Seat to ‘Barbie’?

Since the trailer came out, things haven’t been easy for Ryan Gosling and Ken. The actor was criticized for being “too old” to play the famous character.

Now, the film’s costume designer, Jacqueline Durran, has said that the nice guy had fewer outfits on purpose because no one notices him when Margot Robbie’s Barbie is around.

During an interview with British Vogue, the designer said, “No one cares about Ken; everyone just wants to play with Barbie.” He looks like Barbie and changes, too, but he has a lot less to choose from.

The British designer said that Ken’s main part in the movie was to be “beach” and that most of his clothes would be retro sportswear.

“He is sporty. That’s his main thing. We had buyers in America that went to dealers and imported it for us because we needed so much of it. Ken is kind of a subsidiary of Barbie. So Hot Skatin’ Barbie is the influence on the rollerblading look in the real world, and Ken just has his own version,” said Durran.

In other news, Sarah Greenwood, who is in charge of making Barbies, said that the color pink was used so much in making Barbies that it caused a lack around the world.

According to IndieWire, the artist said that the shooting made the fluorescent shade of Rosco paint hard to find.

“The world ran out of pink,” Greenwood said.

Barbie will be in theaters on July 21, and Robbie and Gosling will be in it.
