Donald L. Fischer, 90, of Williamsport, passed away at the Williamsport Home on Nov. 16, 2023, while surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Bastress Twp. on July 14, 1933, a son of John H. and Audrey Belle (Snyder) Fischer.
He was a 1952 graduate of St. Mary’s High School. After high school he worked a Glycol, now Lonza and then to Buckeye Pretzel. From January of 1953 until Jan. of 1956 he served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean War. Don obtained the rank of sergeant and received the National Defense Medal and the Expert Rifleman medal. When he returned from the service, he returned to Buckeye Pretzel and eventually started Donald L. Fischer Distributor a distributor of snack foods.
A devoted Catholic, he was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, where he served as head usher, served as an altar pappy and sang in the choir.
He was an avid Phillies fan and bowled in the league at Faxon Lanes, he was a lifetime member and former President of the Gesang Verein Harmonia, a member of the White Deer Retirees golf league, the Knights of Columbus #366. Don also was an umpire for Brandon Little League. Don was also involved as a booster for Bishop Neumann sports.
His greatest joy was his family. He spent endless hours going to his children’s and then his grandchildren’s sporting events. Don also enjoyed playing poker, painting by numbers, fishing, and in his later years he enjoyed feeding the squirrels in his yard.
His wife of 68 years, the former Joan L. Stopper, died on Feb. 23, 2021.
He is survived by their children, Michael (Charlene) Fischer, Cathy (James) Pruey, Paula (Mark) Confer, all of Williamsport, and Gregg (Charlene) Fischer of Trout Run; daughter-in-law, Karen L. Fischer of Williamsport; 13 grandchildren, Rebecca (Stephen) Rothra, Brian (Jolene) Fischer, Donald (Marcie) Harding, Carolyn (Larry) Werner, Raymond (Laura) Harding, Jason (Brittany) Fischer, Heather (Matthew) Baehr, Jennifer (Dustin) Prettyleaf, Jody (Michael) Hill, Adam (Katelyn) Fischer, Tylor Fischer, Alex Fischer, and Samantha (Jonathan) Rummel; 19 great-grandchildren; a great great grandson; sisters, Mary I. McFadden of Monica and Jean Boroch of Williamsport; sisters-in-law, Frances Fischer and Billie Lou Fischer both of Williamsport; and brother-in-law, David P. Stopper of Texas, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Donald E. Fischer; twin great granddaughters, Elise and Kacie Werner; brothers, Herman, Robert, John, Raymond, Frederick and Joseph Fischer, and a sister, Audrey Ulsamer.
The family will receive friends and family at Crouse Funeral Home, 133 E. 3rd St., Williamsport on Sunday, Nov. 19, 2023, from 6 to 8 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 20, 2023 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, 326 Washington Blvd., Williamsport with his pastor, Rev. Glenn McCreary officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Boniface Cemetery.
