LOWELL — A car that crashed into the Edgewood Gardens apartment building on Friday afternoon left behind a gaping hole in the structure’s brick wall, as well as several annoyed tenants.
In addition to slamming into a corner of the three-story apartment building, located at 231 Pine St., in the Highlands, the sedan struck two parked cars in the building’s parking lot.
Lowell Deputy Fire Chief James Normandin said the driver of the sedan, who was alone inside the car, was transported from the scene by ambulance.
“But she was up and walking around,” Normandin said. “She wasn’t severely injured by any means.”
Several tenants stood outside the building in the frigid air shortly before 3 p.m. as firefighters addressed the damage done to the building. Among them were the owners of the two cars struck during the chaos.
“I had just fixed my car!” said one woman, pointing to the damage done to the front driver’s side of her vehicle.
The owner of the other damaged car said she was sleeping inside her apartment when she heard what she described as “three bangs.” She knew right away the noise was a motor vehicle crash.
“But I had no idea it was right in our parking lot,” she said.
The woman came outside to investigate, and was met with disappointment when she realized her car was among the damaged vehicles.
“I’m just very thankful I wasn’t in the vehicle at the time,” she said. “Cars can be fixed. I just hope everyone has insurance.”
Another tenant said he felt the rumble from the impact all the way up on the third floor of the building. It’s not surprising information considering the damage caused to the corner of the structure. The sedan crashed through the brick wall exterior and rammed through the dry wall interior. While standing outside, a bed could be seen in the room on the other side of the hole.
Normandin pointed out the tenants of the lone apartment impacted by the wreck were not home at the time.
“There’s significant structural damage, but it appears we can stabilize it,” Normandin said.
A construction company was scheduled to investigate the damage done. Normandin said the hole would be boarded up and wrapped for the night. He did not believe any tenants would be displaced.
The Lowell Police Department was not immediately available for comment.
