Drunken Driver ‘Purposefully’ Collided With Squad Car: Police


ROUND LAKE, IL — A 27-year-old Round Lake man faces charges for allegations he drove drunk and ran head on into a squad car on purpose Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The collision happened at about 4 p.m. when the man’s Chevrolet Trailblazer was driving south on North Cedar Lake Road near Washington Street in Round Lake and “abruptly swerved” into the northbound lanes of traffic, colliding with the squad car, according to a news release from the Round Lake Police Department.

The police officer, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and as of Thursday, the officer remained hospitalized, police said.

The driver of the Trailblazer, who has been identified as Norberto Garcia-Acevedo, 27, of the 300 block of Avilon Court in Round Lake, was taken to the hospital with minor injures and later released and taken into custody.

Garcia-Acevedo has been charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer – great bodily harm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and driving under the influence. He made an initial court appearance on Thursday.
