A driver, who was allegedly under the influence, was arrested after he crashed into a home in Zion and was found with drugs, prosecutors said.

The Zion Police Department responded around 10 p.m. on March 23 to the 3100 block of Gilead Avenue for a vehicle crash.

Officers arrived and found a vehicle had crashed into the house on the corner of 31st Street and Gilead Avenue, according to Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Manuel Mandujano.

The car was in the roadway when officers arrived. The front porch was completely destroyed.

Mandujano said the edge of the home was also damaged and the damage could even be seen from the inside of the residence.

No one was inside the home when the crash occurred.

The driver, Joel Mozo, 20, of Zion, said he was driving from his grandfather’s home when his car slipped and struck the residence, Mandujano said.

Mozo admitted he smoked marijuana and field sobriety tests were conducted and indicated impairment, Mandujano said.

Mandujano said a search of Mozo’s car resulted in 185 grams of cannabis in a plastic bag being discovered. Scales, cash and empty baggies were also found.

Mozo was charged with manufacturing or delivery of cannabis, possession of cannabis over 100 grams, driving under the influence of a drug, reckless driving and unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver.

The charges are non-detainable under the SAFE-T Act and he was released from custody following an appearance in First Appearance Court.

Lake County Judge George Pappas placed Mozo on the highest level of pre-trial services monitoring.

Mozo is scheduled to appear in court again on Wednesday.
