PULLMAN, Wash. — Eastern Washington women’s tennis had its second-straight road match against a Pac-12 opponent on Saturday afternoon, playing Washington State. The Eagles dropped the match, 7-0, to the Cougars. Eastern is now 0-2 on the season.
“We may have lost this team match, but I am proud of what we showed today,” head coach Dustin Hinson said. “We worked all week on trust and belief in our game when on the court. We worked on carrying ourselves on court with that belief, regardless of what the score is or who is winning or losing. We definitely succeeded in making this happen today. The team displayed tremendous composure and they simply played like champions. The way we played with freedom and trust resulted in some great matches as well. We played solid doubles and dominated at number two to get the win”
Jennifer Kida and Anait Arutiunian joined together to win a 6-2 match over WSU’s Yura Nakagawa and Fifa Kumhorn. The two played at the No. 2 doubles spot.
At the No. 1 singles, Kida played well, taking the second set against Eva Alvarez Sande, 6-4. Alvarez Sande won the third set, 6-2, to get the point for WSU. Scout Mathews battled Nakagawa at the No. 2 singles position, coming up short in three sets. The match went to the tiebreaker, with Nakagawa prevailing.
“Anait [Arutiunian] and Jennifer [Kida] played a really tough set. Then in singles, we played with fight and freedom and took the top two singles matches to three sets. Jennifer [Kida] and Scout [Mathews] played great tennis against very good opponents and came close to victory in those matches. The other four matches were hard fought and I’m proud of those efforts,” Hinson said of his team. “Overall, the step up in confidence and trust from last weekend to this weekend was great and exactly what I was looking for on the court. We play these tough opponents on purpose because we know it’s not going to be easy. We know it will make us better. That’s exactly what it did today and we are excited to continue working to keep building.”
