Defensive end Derek Barnett has not played in the last two Eagles games and he won’t be part of their lineup anymore this season.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the team will waive Barnett on Friday. Barnett has been on the injury report for personal reasons and has not practiced with the team this week.
Barnett has not played a major role when he has been active this year and has three tackles in eight appearances. The 2017 first-round pick has 150 tackles, 21.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries over his entire run in Philadelphia. He also had nine tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery in five postseason appearances.
There’s been speculation about the Eagles having interest in linebacker Shaquille Leonard following his release from the Colts earlier this week. The Barnett move opens up a roster spot they could use to add the veteran, although there’s no immediate sign that the Barnett move is related to any particular pursuit.
