Ed Sheeran’s ‘Ted Lasso’ Lyrics and Original Music Earn Him His First Emmy

On Saturday night, Grammy-winning artist Ed Sheeran shocked fans and fellow event guests by earning his first-ever Emmy event.

Sheeran’s contribution to the touching Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso with the song A Beautiful Game earned him the prestigious prize for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.

Other nominees included songs from Ginny & Georgia, The L Word: Generation Q, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Ted Lasso (who garnered two nominations, with Sheeran writing only one of them), and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

This is the first Emmy nomination for the Perfect singer, for the Max Martin-produced song A Beautiful Game, which featured in Ted Lasso’s third-season finale.

The singer was not there to accept the award. This award recognizes a song or score produced specifically for a television program. Last year’s winner was Cinco Paul, who generated original material for Schmigadoon.

On Saturday, Lasso received the award for best guest actor in a comedy series for his portrayal as Sam Richardson at the 2023 Creative Arts Emmys. The Apple TV+ comedy had gotten 61 nominations and 13 wins as of the time this article was published, making it a favorite among Emmy voters.

During the two-day Creative Arts gala preceding the Primetime Emmys on January 15, about 100 TV awards, mostly in the technical category, will be given out. The Creative Arts Emmys will also be shown in edited form on FXX on January 13 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
