The eighth Annual Cody Dobbins Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser was held at Morgan Lanes Bowling Alley on Saturday and Sunday.
The Cody Dobbins Memorial Scholarship is dedicated to supporting youth in achieving their goals of attaining a higher education. Last year, the event raised $34,368 and awarded 22 students scholarships totaling $21,500. Over the years, scholarships have been awarded to students in Brush, Fleming, Fort Morgan, New Raymer, and even one in Wyoming.
“Each year we have one ‘no contest’ scholarship that is awarded,” said Quinton Dobbins, Cody’s father. “Someone in the group has the option to award a scholarship to someone of their choice. We have awarded a total of 113 $500 or $1,000 scholarships.”
Stacey Dobbins, Cody’s mother, said that the scholarships are awarded for trade school or college.
“One year we awarded a scholarship to someone who went to school in Hawaii to become an oceanographer,” said Stacey.
The event was attended by friends, family, and supporters of the family and their mission to help students with scholarships in honor of their son Cody, who passed away in 2015.
Saturday was an evening of bowling, a silent and a live auction. Everyone enjoyed good music, good food, and fun.
Sunday morning began with Stacey Dobbins talking to the crowd. “When my heart is heavy, and I miss Cody, I find myself listening to his music. He had a playlist of songs and our family has always shared songs with each other. When times are hard and when times are great, or when we are thinking of Cody, we send each other songs. Music was a big part of Cody’s life.”
“Thank you all for coming out and continuing to support this event,” she continued. “We are so blessed and grateful for all of you. I know the students that receive these scholarships thank you all as well. Let’s have another great year full of fun, and laughter and create memories to last a lifetime.”
