A 75-year-old man who had been reported missing was killed in a one-car crash in a construction zone on I-75 near Rattalee Lake Road early Sunday in Springfield Township.
According to Michigan State Police, word of the crash came in at around 4:40 a.m.
The section of the freeway where the crash occurred had been closed over the weekend for road work. The man killed had been reported as missing and suffering from dementia, MSP stated.
He was not wearing a seatbelt, MSP stated.
A preliminary investigation showed the man drove his Volkswagen Tiguan into the closed portion of the freeway “through a section of the roadway which was missing a portion of the concrete creating about a 1.5 foot drop off,” and the impact caused substantial damage to the vehicle and fatal injuries to the driver, MPS stated.
A report from the medical examiner’s office is pending.
