A brazen robbery took place at a Fort Lauderdale Target, with a thief making off with a $1,500 personal transportation gadget in broad daylight. The incident occurred outside the Coral Ridge Mall Target location near Oakland Park and U.S. 1, where the victim, a 68-year-old shopper, was targeted for what he suspects was his elderly appearance, as reported by WSVN. The stolen item, a pricey one-wheel, was swiftly snatched from the victim’s cart.
Vincent Odeh, the older shopper, recounted the events leading up to the theft. “When I got there, I’ve got me a shopping cart and I put the one-wheel on top.” Surveillance cameras captured the suspect tailing Odeh before making a move to swipe the high-value item. “I’m pushing it and I’m almost inside and all of a sudden this guy comes up from behind me and grabs it,” he said.
The thief made a quick escape to an accomplice’s car, described as a four-door white sedan. In a dramatic turn, Odeh attempted to recover his property. “I opened the door and I was ready to go in, but then he showed me his knife inside, so I go ‘Woah.’” The victim, unable to pursue further because of the displayed weapon, was left without the means to replace his stolen one-wheel.
In a surprising twist, a 7News photographer discovered a piece of the getaway car—a door handle—in nearby bushes, offering new evidence in a case that had grown cold. “Wow, he yanked the hell out of that, he was in a hurry… Man, that is fantastic, I can’t believe that you found it,” Odeh exclaimed. As the investigation continues, authorities and Odeh hope the newfound clue and public recognition of the distinct red one-wheel will lead to the suspect’s capture.
Fort Lauderdale Police urge anyone with information about the crime to contact Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Witnesses can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000. The information was also shared by SpotOnFlorida, in their coverage of the ongoing search for the suspect.
