JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Elon University women’s tennis team fell 4-0 to Georgia Southern on Saturday in its first of two matches this weekend in Florida. The match was played at North Florida’s campus in Jacksonville.

The Eagles continued their undefeated start (4-0) with the win while the Phoenix fell to 1-2 on the season with the defeat. 
 
THE RUNDOWN

• The start of the match was delayed by two hours due to overnight rain. 
• The Eagles picked up victories at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to go ahead 1-0. Madison Cordisco and Mariana Reding were at 5-5 on Court 2 when their match was abandoned. 
• Georgia Southern picked up straight sets victories at the Nos. 2, 3 and 6 singles spots to move ahead 4-0. The remaining singles matches were abandoned. 
• On Court 1, Sibel Tanik rebounded after losing her first set to Silvia Martinez, winning the second 6-3 to send the match to a decisive frame. However, the match was abandoned with Martinez up 1-0 in the third.  
• Mariana Reding also rallied after losing the first set of her singles match on Court 5, winning her second set 6-3 to force a third. The freshman was up 3-2 in the set when the match was halted. 
• Competing at the No. 4 spot, Helen Sarikulaya played a tight first set, losing 7-3 in a tiebreaker. Only one game in the second set was completed before the match was stopped, with Sarikulaya up 1-0. 
• The loss snapped Elon’s five-match winning streak against the Eagles. 

 
UP NEXT
Elon will cap off its weekend in Florida tomorrow with a match against North Florida. Originally slated for a 10 a.m. start, the contest will now start at 11:30 a.m. due to expected overnight weather.
