Emmy-Winning ‘Simpsons’ Producer John Bush Dies at 69


John Bush, an Emmy-winning producer who worked on popular animated shows such as The Simpsons, Family Guy, and X-Men: Evolution, passed away on November 23, 2023, at the age of 69. Bush died of B-cell lymphoma of the brain stem at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles, according to his friend Kevin Bannerman, who confirmed the news.

Bush’s work in animation lasted decades and left an enduring effect on the industry. He began his career working on legendary films such as The Nome Prince and the Magic Belt and Toto Lost in New York before joining the team behind The Simpsons in its early seasons.

His work garnered him an Emmy Award in 2001 for Outstanding Animated Programme, demonstrating his dedication and talent.

Aside from The Simpsons, Bush has produced a wide range of animated hits, including King of the Hill, New Looney Tunes, Scooby-Doo! and the Gourmet Ghost, and the Brave Little Toaster movie series. He also dabbled in live-action with series like Clerks, Edgar & Ellen, and the 2015 film Open Season: Scared Silly.

Bush’s colleagues and friends have spoken out about his death, praising his love of animation, collaborative attitude, and contagious sense of humour. “John was a brilliant producer and a wonderful friend,” said Al Jean, showrunner for The Simpsons. “He was always full of ideas and always had a smile on his face. He will be deeply missed.”

The late producer’s legacy is carried on by the innumerable animated characters he helped bring to life.
