In a collaborative effort to enhance the quality of life for People With Disabilities (PWDs) in Bungoma, a significant distribution of assistive gadgets took place, marking a milestone in local disability support. The initiative, a partnership between the Red Cross, Bungoma County government, and CBM Global Kenya, saw the delivery of essential mobility and hearing aids to those in need, with the event taking place at the Bungoma Red Cross offices.
Partnership for Progress
During the ceremony, Bungoma County CEC for Health and Sanitation, Dr. Andrew Wamalwa, praised the collaborative effort, emphasizing its importance for the community. “This is a great gesture to our country; such partnerships will help our people live a good life,” he remarked. The assistive devices distributed included standard tricycles, various types of crutches, hearing aids, protective glasses, surgical boots, and wheelchairs, among others. These gadgets are set to significantly improve the daily lives of PWDs, enabling better mobility and communication.
Encouraging Self-Sufficiency
Dr. Wamalwa also highlighted the county’s commitment to inclusivity and empowerment for PWDs, encouraging them to take advantage of county tenders, 30% of which are reserved for them. This initiative not only aims to support their mobility and communication needs but also to foster economic empowerment and self-sufficiency among the PWD community in Bungoma. Furthermore, the county has begun rehabilitation screenings to identify specific needs, ensuring that the right gadgets are provided to those who need them most.
Continuous Support and Rehabilitation
The county’s dedication to improving the quality of life for PWDs extends beyond the distribution of gadgets. Dr. Wamalwa announced the hiring of five specialists to offer rehabilitative services across the county, demonstrating a long-term commitment to disability support. CBM Global and the Red Cross’s choice of Bungoma for this initiative reflects the potential for significant positive impact on the community’s PWDs, enabling them to lead more independent and fulfilling lives.
The distribution of assistive gadgets in Bungoma is a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of partnership and community support. By addressing mobility and hearing challenges, this initiative not only enhances the daily lives of PWDs but also integrates them more fully into the fabric of society. As these individuals gain increased independence and the ability to participate more actively in their communities, Bungoma sets a precedent for how collaboration and targeted support can break down barriers and create a more inclusive world for everyone.
