The biopic about Bob Dylan isn’t the only film about a real person in theaters right now. There’s also THE FIRE INSIDE, about Claressa Shields, the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing. THE FIRE INSIDE isn’t as good as A COMPLETE UNKNOWN, but it’s better than a typical biopic about a famous athlete. The best part of this film is after the 17 year old black boxer wins her first gold medal. She’s surprised and angry to discover that her victory will not lift her family out of poverty. In fact, she gets no endorsement offers whatsoever. Two fine actors really shine in THE FIRE INSIDE. Ryan Destiny as Claressa and Oscar nominee Bryan Tyree Henry as Jason Crutchfield, the volunteer boxing coach who is like a father to Claressa. The script is by Oscar winning writer, Barry Jenkins. First time director, Rachel Morrison, was the first female cinematographer ever nominated for an Oscar.
