Hollywood’s obsession with female youth and beauty is a ripe subject for satire, but THE SUBSTANCE uses a sledge hammer when a tack hammer would work better. Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley star in this well acted science fiction fantasy about a frustrated middle aged actress who injects herself with a mysterious substance that creates a younger version of herself. But what begins as a fascinating struggle between the two women turns into a grotesque and disgusting bloodbath at the end. (IN THEATERS)
