Friday evening, renowned environmentalist and whistleblower Erin Brockovich spoke at a high school auditorium in East Palestine, Ohio. Brockovich, who gained national recognition and an Oscar-nominated biopic for exposing Pacific Gas & Electric Company’s groundwater contamination in Hinkley, California, ran through a series of slides outlining legal strategies as residents seek redress in the wake of Norfolk Southern’s catastrophic train derailment. “I understand your anguish and your frustration. You are not alone. Every community I’ve visited has provided me with the runaround. You’ll be assured it’s okay and that you’re protected, but it’s not,” Brockovich added, urging residents to “bond together and protect each other.” Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar and the “Moms of Flint, [Michigan]” who began mobilizing when their water was determined to contain deadly levels of lead in 2014 also attended Brockovich’s talk. Brockovich stated, “You’re in a predicament that you’ll be dealing with for the rest of your lives if you stay here.”
