CHESTER, Conn. (WTNH) – Bixby Kennedy is a rising star thanks to his work with the clarinet.
“The clarinet has a wide variety of sounds and styles,” he said.
He plays big venues all around the country. But this day, he’s performing for senior citizens at Masonicare, an independent living facility in Chester.
“It’s really great to interact with people and have a more intimate conversation with them,” said Kennedy.
“The Essex Winter Series has been doing outreach to the community for the last 13 years,” said artistic director Mihae Lee.
Every year, the Essex Winter Series features world-class music right here in Connecticut.
“It’s got some chamber music. It always has jazz. It has an emerging artist,” said Susan Guernsey, president of the EWS board of trustees.
Also during the season, there’s a week of giving back, bringing music to the elderly and students in the local schools.
“For me, it’s like planting seeds for the children particularly, so, when they grow up, the appreciation of music is part of their life,” said Lee.
As for the seniors, Lee believes enjoying music – even playing tunes – keeps them sharp.
“I encourage a lot of people who are retired to just take piano lessons. It’s good for your dexterity and brain,” she said.
“He must practice every day seriously because those were serious, serious pieces,” said resident Don Hick who smiled throughout the entire concert.
He wasn’t alone. The program was enjoyed by all.
“It was a wonderful part of my day, I love music,” said resident Florence Roach.
While music invigorates the mind, it also fills the heart with joy.
“It’s life, it’s what you breathe, it’s air but, mostly, it’s love and passion,” said Lee.
There’s still one more regular Essex Winter Series concert coming up on Apr. 7th at Valley Regional High School.
