2024 in Milano promises to be a year of great exhibitions with more than 50 scheduled to invigorate the civic cultural venues such as Palazzo Reale and the PAC Pavilion of Contemporary Art, not forgetting, of course, exhibitions in private museums such as Fondazione Prada or Pirelli HangarBicocca.
Some great names will be protagonists of the year, starting from Picasso who will be featured on two different occasions: Picasso. La metamorfosi della Figura (Metamorphosis of the Figure), at Mudec – Museum of Cultures from February 22nd to June 30th, and Picasso lo straniero (Picasso the Foreigner), at Palazzo Reale from September 20th to February 2nd, 2025.
Also at Palazzo Reale: Cézanne and Renoir. Artworks on loan from the Musée d’Orsay and the Orangerie collections will illustrate the great Impressionist artists, from March 19th to June 30th, and the museum will then close the year in style with Edvard Munch, from September to January 2025.
Three exhibitions not to be missed for photography lovers in 2024: Martin Parr. Short & Sweet at Mudec – Museum of Cultures, from February 10th to June 30th, and two shows at Palazzo Reale: Brassaï. L’occhio di Parigi (The Eye of Paris), works 1930 – 1958, from February 23rd to June 2nd, and Ugo Mulas. L’operazione fotografica (The Photographic Operation) from October 3rd to January 26th, 2025.
If, however, you wish to immerse yourself in the world of contemporary art, we recommend two exhibitions at the PAC: Adrian Piper. Race Traitor will be shown from March 20th to June 9th, and Liliana Moro from June to September.
At Mudec – Museum of Cultures, the works of Niki de Saint Phalle, famous for the Tarot Garden near Siena, will be on display from October to February 2025, while at the Pirelli HangarBicocca numerous exhibitions will celebrate 20 years of the art institution’s foundation.
Absolutely not to be missed in these anniversary events is the creation of the new site-specific artwork on the exterior walls of Hangar’s The Cube building: on July 3rd the French-Tunisian artist eL Seed will create a mural on a monumental scale that will reflect the story of the local community.
If you wish to reflect on alternative themes, the 2024 programme also offers more specific exhibitions such as Tatuaggio. Storie dal Mediterraneo (Tattoo. Tales from the Mediterranean) at Mudec – Museum of Cultures from March 28th to July 28th, or Dal Cuore alle Mani (From the Heart to the Hands) Dolce & Gabbana, at Palazzo Reale from April 7th to July 31st.
To wrap up 2024 in style, a spectacular exhibition on the fantastical world of Tim Burton, director of cinematic masterpieces such as Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride, will invigorate the Fabbrica del Vapore spaces. From December 6th to March 2nd, 2025, prepare to enter Tim Burton’s amazing Labyrinth.
