Faculty art show opens at UCC

Umpqua Community College (UCC) unveiled the Visual Art Faculty show of 2024 to the public on February 12th.

This is the first time UCC opened a faculty art gallery in more than seven years that highlights the artist’s personal art practice and development while teaching art courses at the college.

The exhibit features almost 40 different pieces of art that represent a variety of different styles including sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking.

Assistant Professor of Art & Gallery Director Tiffany Hokanson says the exhibit means so much to her, being able to convey faculty art to the students to show how much they can accomplish.

“It bridges a gap between professor and student when they see that I’m an artist just like they are, and so I think that’s the most exciting. It’s meaningful for me to create those relationships with students and I think that’s such a good vehicle, the show being here in this building when I teach upstairs is such a good vehicle for that to happen.”

The exhibit features art from Susan Rochester, Greg Price, Noelle Herceg, and Tiffany Hokanson. This year marks 22 years of Susan Rochester teaching art at UCC; she plans on retiring this year as well after her long tenure as a professor.

UCC Student Felix Coe helped with putting up this art exhibit, and believes this is a great chance for art students to understand their professors more by seeing some of their work in person.

“The students that don’t ever really get to see the work really want to and it’s great when you see stuff like this because it’s everywhere and it’s amazing work that we never get to see and it was really cool to be a part of that.”

The art gallery can be found at the Whipple Fine Arts Center on campus. The exhibit is open from February 12th to March 13th.

Visitors can stop by Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free and a public reception will take place on March 7th at noon.
