Fashion and beauty autumn trends to note

As September ushers in a new season, our Style Editors, Lauren and Laura, are on hand to guide you through the latest fashion and beauty trends.

Whether you’re keen to refresh your makeup collection with some trending cosmetics, or you’re eager to infuse your wardrobe with autumnal tones, we’ve got you covered. From bold red lipsticks and blushers to wearable greens and essential boots for stepping out, take a look at these nine trends and get a head start on your new-season shopping….

LEOPARD PRINT VS CHECK

Check

If Claudia Winkleman’s ‘traitorcore’ wardrobe had you scrambling for country checks and traditional tartans back in January, then brace yourself for their return. Autumn sees ‘British country style’ once again taking centre stage with Prince Of Wales checks, traditional tweeds and plaid patterns reimagined by designers such as Dior, Vivienne Westwood and Schaparelli.

On the high street, Hobbs is already setting the pace with its elegant new season collection.

Top Style Tip: Invest in a checkered two-piece, blazer or a double-breasted coat.

Shop the trend: Blazer, Hobbs, £199 here and matching skirt, £110 here.

Leopard

We’re all about investing in trends that stand the test of time, and it seems the ‘Mobwife’ aesthetic isn’t fading away anytime soon. If you jumped on the trend this spring, keep those pieces at the front of your wardrobe as animal print continues to make headlines.

We spotted leopard print accessories at Isabel Marant, trench coats at Dior, luxe suiting at Dries Van Noten and even statement tights at Zimmerman- go wild.

Top Style Tip: Keep it chic and pair with chocolate brown or camel shades.

Shop the trend: Dress, Monsoon, £125 here.

Thanks to Taylor Swift’s influence, red lips are making a comeback this autumn and winter. You can achieve this look with NARS’ new Explicit Lipstick in the shade Unauthorised, available for £34 here, or Rimmel Oh My Gloss! Lip Oil in Vivid Red, priced at £8.99 here.

Pair it with Bio Sculpture’s gel polish shade Zoey on your nails; the brand predicts that this stylish dark copper-red will be the salon favourite this season.

RETINAL INSTEAD OF RETINOL

Now that we’re all familiar with the benefits of retinol (Boots reported that it was the most searched skincare ingredient in 2023), it’s time to switch to retinAL. Also known as retinaldehyde, retinal converts into skin-friendly vitamin A more efficiently and works up to 11 times faster.

You can expect to see faster results on fine lines and wrinkles without irritation with these innovative new formulas.

Shop the trend: Kate Somerville Mega A Skin Transforming Serum, £72 here; The Ordinary Retinal 0.2% Emulsion, £15.20 here; and Paula’s Choice Clinical Pro Retinaldehyde Dual-Retinoid Treatment, £63 here.

GOLDI LOCKS

‘Golden hour hair’ was a massive trend for blondes over the summer, and it seems the shift from cool, ashy tones to warmer shades is set to continue this season. Stephane Ferreira, operations manager and senior colourist at salon chain Live True, suggests asking for a honey blonde hue at your next hair appointment.

“It’s easygoing and the perfect transition shade from summer to winter,” he says. It’s ideal for clients looking to move to a darker blonde from their summer shade but keep it warm and glossy.”

BUILT-TO-LAST BOOTS

As we step into the new season, boots are taking centre stage and the AW24 offerings are sure to grab your attention. From patent riding styles at Gucci to zipped up bikers at Hermes, there’s a pair to suit everyone’s taste.

For those seeking immediate style inspiration, stride into autumn with these chunky stomper styles below.

Top Style Tip: Balance out heavy soles and tough hardware with floaty fabrics and feminine details like ruffles.

Shop the trend: Battle boots, Steve Madden, £250 here; knee-high biker boots, All Saints, £349 here; and embellished leather boots, Acne Studios, £1000 here.

CHIC CHEEKS

If you thought there was only one way to add colour to your cheeks then it’s time to think again. Blusher has quickly become one of the most versatile items in our makeup stash, with trends such as ‘sunset blush’, ‘boyfriend blush’ and ‘crying blush’ going viral this year.

Our beauty editor – and long-time blusherphobe – Laura Mulley has been converted by Rhode’s viral Pocket Blushes, £24 here (“the shade Piggy will give a youthful pop of colour to winter skin”). Other new launches we love include Dior Rouge Blush Colour & Glow, £48 here, 19/99 Cream Blush Stick, £28 here, and Glow Hub Glow Balm The Good Skin Glaze, £12 here.

POLYNUCLEOTIDES

Traditional injectables such as Botox and dermal fillers have taken a backseat in recent years as people are now going for tweakments that improve the quality of the skin rather than change the shape of the face. “Injectable polynucleotides activate fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin. This promotes tissue regeneration, leading to smoother, firmer and more youthful-looking skin,” says Dr Anjali Mahto, consultant dermatologist at Self London.

“They can be used to treat various areas of the face and body including fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin and areas prone to volume loss.”

Prices start from around £275.

BOHO’S BACK…AGAIN!

Sienna Miller’s fabulous collaboration with Marks & Spencer has already set the tone for this summer’s boho trend, but it was Chemena Kamali’s first appearance at Chloe that confirmed the trend for autumn – indeed, this trend has literally tumbled straight from the catwalk.

Models showcased their looks in transparent ruffled dresses teamed with leather, studded boots and standout sunglasses, while Isabel Marant’s trademark fringing and boho prints affirmed that the boho trend is here to stay.

Get the look: Chiffon dress, H&M, £34.99 here; studded western boots, River Island, £55 here; and ruffle blouse, Anthropologie, £199 here.

GO GREEN

While cherry red may have ruled the spring/ summer catwalks, it’s green that’s been given the green light for autumn. Whether neon lime, forest, or earthy olive, this flattering shade deserves a prime spot in your new season wardrobe.

If you’re new to wearing the colour, opt for khaki. It’s surprisingly easy to wear and is going to be all over the high street soon….

Get the look: Jacket, Monsoon, £36 here; handbag, Penelope Chilvers, £150 here; and maxi skirt, ASOS, £36 here.
