FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid: Who is the champion of LaLiga in Television Revenue?

LaLiga has published the official distribution by clubs of the television revenues for the 2023-2024 season. A total of 1.351 billion euros have been distributed among the teams in the First Division. This figure represents a decrease compared to the previous season when 1.374.10 million euros were received.

However, despite the drop in total revenues, FC Barcelona has managed to increase its revenue from 160.53 million euros in the 2022-23 season to 162.49 million euros in 2023-24. With this increase, the Blaugrana team becomes the team with the highest television revenue in all of LaLiga, surpassing Real Madrid, which falls to second place in the ranking. The white club went from 161.24 million euros in 22-23 to 159.55 million euros in 2023-24.

The third team that earned the most money from audiovisual rights was Atlético de Madrid, but the mattress makers also suffered a setback, going from 119 million to 117.89 million. The next on the list, Sevilla, is another team that lost revenue compared to the previous season, going from 82 million to 72.49 million, ten million less.

Real Sociedad and Athletic Club did manage to increase their revenue. The team from San Sebastián rose from 65 to 70 million, and the team from Bilbao from 66 to 67 million, one more than the previous year. Betis, on the other hand, also lost revenue, going from 70 million to 66.98 million. The rest of the teams in the First Division had revenues between 40 and 60 million euros.

This is how the money from television is distributed in the First Division

  • Half of the money is distributed equally among the 20 teams.
  • The remaining 50% is divided into two parts:

1. The first is distributed based on the sporting results obtained over the last five seasons. But not all count the same: the last season has a weight of 35%; the penultimate, 20%, and the previous three, 15%. To apply these criteria, each position in the ranking is assigned a weight. For example, of the 35% corresponding to the last season, 17% goes to the league champion (Real Madrid); while the second receives 15%; the third, 13%. The second to last receives barely 0.5% and the last, 0.25% of the total.

2. The second part rewards the social implantation that each team has (with none being able to exceed 20% or be below 2%). Of the amounts corresponding to this concept, 1/3 is distributed based on the average revenue achieved from ticket sales and subscriptions over the last five seasons. The remaining 2/3 are allocated based on their participation in generating resources from the commercialization of television broadcasts.
