FDA looks to update nutrition labels on packaged foods

ORLANDO, Fla. — The United States Food and Drug Administration is looking at new ways to label the foods that we eat.

The FDA is proposing nutrition labels on packaged foods that would break down information about sodium, added sugar and saturated fat by saying whether the food contains “low,” “med” or “high” levels of the nutrients.

It is part of the agency’s effort to combat chronic illnesses such as heart disease, obesity, cancer, and diabetes.

If approved, major manufacturers would have to add the labels on their packaged foods within three years.
