The FDA has proposed requiring front-of-package (FOP) nutrition labels on most packaged foods, categorizing levels of saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars as “Low,” “Medium,” or “High.”
This initiative aims to combat chronic diseases like obesity and heart disease by making nutrition information more accessible.
Modeled after systems in countries like the U.K., the labels are planned for implementation by 2028. Larger manufacturers would have three years to comply, while smaller ones would have four.
Supporters say the labels could promote healthier choices and product reformulation, though some industry groups advocate for voluntary measures. Public comments on the proposal are open until May 2025.
