THIS EVENING – TUESDAY FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY: As we head into the evening our we’ll see clouds increase as winds will turn from the WNW. By 10pm – midnight, snow and spotty mix will be moving into the James River Valley and Devils Lake Basin along and behind a very strong cold front. The overnight period will be very active. Snow continues to move in from the west and there will be moderate to heavy snowfall rates overnight into Tuesday morning – particularly in the central Red River Valley (between Fargo and Grand Forks) and up through Beltrami county. This heavy band may shift north or south slightly and greatly influence forecast amounts in both Fargo and GF and other cities along the narrow band.
SNOWFALL POTENTIAL: 1-4″ is possible in the FM area – closer to 4″ if that heavy band as previously discussed shifts slightly south, and on the lower end if it shifts slightly north. In Grand Forks, forecast amounts are expected to be similar to those of Fargo, again dependent on shift of the heavier band of snow. Between Fargo and Grand Forks is expected to see about 3 to 5 inches. This quick moving front has the potential to drop 5 to 7 inches in some areas of the central RRV into northwest MN (northwest Norman county, up through northern Clearwater county of MN), although lesser accumulations are expected in most locations. A general 1-4″ overall. Check your VNL weather app and the weather graphics on our web page for the latest forecast snow amounts.
IMPACTS: The morning commute Tuesday will be tough in most areas, regardless of heavy snow or not. There will be some accumulation by the early AM commute making for slick and snow covered roads. Wind will be very strong out of the north leading to near-blizzard/blizzard conditions. Falling and blowing snow will create poor visibility and areas of zero visibility. Be sure to check the latest road conditions here on our website and/or your VNL weather app before you head out the door so you can best prepare.
TEMPERATURES: Colder conditions are expected with highs in the 20 and 30s around midnight, and falling through the rest of the day into the teens and single digits as the strong front sweeps through. It will feel colder due to the wind from the northwest with wind chills expected to drop into the teens and 20s below zero. Big changes from what we have been experiencing the last few weeks, and we wanted to give you the First Alert heads up to these changes!
EXTEDED FORECAST:
WEDNESDAY – FRIDAY: Still chilly but with less wind Wednesday. Lows will be in the single digits either side of zero, and highs in the teens to low 20s with mostly sunny conditions. Another warm front arrival means temperatures quickly warm back up Thursday! The trend is for 40s to low 50s to return to the region by Thursday. The first day of Meteorological Spring arrives on Friday (March 1st) and it will be feeling like mid/late spring with highs in the 50s to near 60 with sunny skies!
SATURDAY – SUNDAY: Another mild weekend is in store as we welcome in the new month. Saturday will be the cooler of the two with highs looking to be in the 40s. It looks breezy as well with a front passing through that may bring some flakes or light snow showers. Sunday will be even warmer with highs in the 50s to near 60. Sunday will also be windier. We are eyeing a chance for more wintry changes late Sunday night into Monday. There is a chance for mix/snow, though it is a ways out still and details are not clear. Highs in the 30s by Monday.
