Florida Uber driver caught in stolen rental car, deputies say


A Florida Uber driver was arrested on Tuesday after he was caught picking up passengers with a rental car he stopped paying for. Elijah Mills, the 27-year-old Uber driver, was stopped by Polk County deputies while driving a Chevy Equinox on U.S. 27 in the Four Corners area of Davenport.During the stoppage, Mills was Ubering a couple who were visiting from the United Kingdom in his car.The Polk County Sheriff’s Office stated that the car Mills was driving was not actually his. It belonged to a company in Orange County that reported the car as stolen after Mills allegedly failed to pay for it. Mills told deputies that he received daily calls from the car company but never answered because he knew they were regarding his payments. The car company equips each vehicle with a device that prevents cars from starting if a person fails to pay.However, Mills confessed he kept the car running for three weeks straight to prevent the car from stopping. The PCSO said Mills was charged with grand theft motor vehicle and driving while license suspended or revoked. Deputies gave the couple in the car during Mills’ arrest a free ride to where they were staying.
