Food Bank of Northern Nevada Says the Need for Food Assistance is Still High

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada tells us there’s a lot of need for food assistance in our area.

The nonprofit has seen record amounts of people reaching out for help, more than what they saw during the peak of the pandemic.

On Tuesday, they had their Mobile Harvest at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints off Rock Blvd.

The volunteers said that as soon as they opened up at 9 a.m. there were about 30 cars lined up on McCarran Blvd and they had to direct traffic to get people in.

The Food Bank runs this program almost every day.

They served more than 400 households, a number that keeps getting bigger and bigger.

“It’s impossible for us not to think of when we were in the middle of the pandemic and the shutdown and we saw 200, 300 households. We were shocked and seeing 400 households at one distribution is not unusual anymore,” said Jocelyn Lantrip, Director of Marketing and Communications, FBNN.

Lantrip says the Food Bank serves about 153,000 people per month.

That number has also increased since the pandemic.

“Mostly, what we’re hearing from our neighbors is cost of living and income’s not keeping up with that cost-of-living increase,” Lantrip said.

The Mobile Harvest moves locations every day and is available almost every weekday.

The program reaches different parts of the community to reach more people and to give more access.

They’re either walk ups or drive through, but if you don’t have a car, you can still go to the drive throughs.

For those who want the help, it’s a simple process.

All you have to do is show up, fill out a quick form, and then you can get the food.

There are no qualifications, and people can go once per week.

Other than the mobile harvest, the food bank works with 150 partner agencies to try and address the need as much as possible.

“A lot of the food goes through our partner agencies so Mobile Hharvest is just one prong in a very complicated wheel,” Lantrip said.

The Food Bank has a multitude of programs, and they also have a calendar for their Mobile Harvest programs.
