Food banks distribute 2,000 turkeys in preparation for Thanksgiving

NORMAL (25News Now) – Home Sweet Home Ministries and The Midwest Food Bank in Normal handed out turkeys and food boxes with all the fixings to make for a special Thanksgiving.

The Give Thanks Distribution partnership has been going on for more than ten years, intended to serve low-income families in the Bloomington-Normal area.

The CEO of Home Sweet Home Ministries, Matt Burgess, says it’s a season of gratitude, and he’s thankful to give back to such a supportive community.

“Every year, people who might not otherwise be able to sit around a table, take time to be with each other, and be thankful, they’re able to do that, so it’s a really special initiative,” Burgess said.

Volunteers from both organizations handed out 2,000 turkeys and food boxes between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Burgess says by 11 O’clock, they had already served 800 households and still had hundreds of cars waiting in the parking lot.
