Food prices on the rise ahead of Memorial Day cookouts


As we honor those who have fallen in the line of duty on this Memorial Day, many will likely be cooking food on the grill.

However, you might be spending more than anticipated, as food prices have noticeably increased.

Data accumulated from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that the average cost of a cookout is about $87.76.

The bureau noted that in 2023, the average cost per cookout in Florida was $83.70, a 3.6% increase from last year.

While inflation hurts our wallets, the study mentioned a 12% increase from 2022 to 2023, when it rose from $76.87 to $86.32.

In Southwest Florida, WINK News found the average price per pound for ground beef for last-minute shoppers:

  • Publix $11.17 / lb
  • Walmart $10.66 / lb
  • Target $ 6.99 / lb

The average price for 8-count hotdogs:

  • Walmart: $4.84
  • Publix: $6.59
  • Target: $3.49
