Food Review: Ju Xing Home In Ngee Ann City | Popular Michelin Bib Gourmand Restaurant From Hong Kong Opens In Singapore

The Place An exciting new addition to Ngee Ann City, Ju Xing Home (聚兴家) is a new restaurant in Orchard Road from Hong Kong which is popular amongst many renowned chefs and celebrities. This is Ju Xing Home’s first overseas outlet in Singapore, where the hole-in-the-wall restaurant established since 2011 with a Michelin Bib Gourmand in Hong Kong by chef-owner Ng Kong Kiu focuses on unpretentious zi char classics. The Ngee Ann City outlet spots a contemporary interior with a mix of banquette seating, regular tables and a private room.

The Food Expect Cantonese stir-fries and Sichuan flavours for the dishes here, including house signatures like Boiled Fish with Chilli Oil, Lobster with Pan-Fried Rice Vermicelli and Sweet and Sour Pork. There is also live seafood that will be served fresh from the tank just as in Hong Kong.

I started with the Double-boiled Clam Soup with Mountain Pepper (S$18.80/Regular), a comforting soup dish to start with a strong hint of Sarawak pepper. There are also ingredients like hairy gourd vegetables and rice vermicelli within.

One of my favourite dishes here and a must order is Tiger Prawn with Crispy Vermicelli and Signature Sauce (S$29.80/Regular). The crispy vermicelli is so awesome, where you get thin crispy texture which goes well with the seafood sauce prepared from prawns and chicken broth. I probably had a little too much of the crispy vermicelli myself. The huge prawn is very fresh too.

The Poached Fish in Sichuan Chilli Oil (S$45.80/Regular) should be a favourite amongst Sichuan cuisine lovers. The spiciness kicks in towards the end on the tongue, and being a mild spice eater, I do enjoy the fresh flavour of the fish in the chilli oil though I was also conscious not to overeat for the well-being of my stomach.

A milder yet equally delicious Sichuan dish I will recommend having instead is the Sichuan Fish with Pickled Mustard (S$38.80/Regular). The broth here which is made from boiling a whole chicken is not spicy at all and boasts a nice sour note, which makes it very drinkable. You can also expect a delicious and fresh flavour of the fish.

For beef lovers, rejoice in the Sichuan Mala Sliced Beef (S$26.80). You get generous slices of tender beef soaked in the Mala broth with generous additions of Sichuan chilli and peppercorns. This dish is probably best with some white rice.

Another must try dish is the Sweet and Sour Pork (S$16.80/Regular). I know it sounds very ordinary as this dish is commonly found in most Chinese Zichar restaurants, but the version here is extremely tender and that sticky and tangy hawthorn sauce is not overly sweet for me.

Other dishes I had include the Stir-Fried Kai Lan in Claypot (S$16.80) and Supreme Soy Sauce Fried Noodles (S$12.80/Small), where the fried noodles strike a resemblance in taste to our local Singaporean Bee Hoon.

For dessert, I had a nourishing Almond Paste with Egg White (S$6.80).

Rants If you love spice and expect a big bang spicy notes on the dishes, it is not the case at Ju Xing Home which is a Cantonese take on Sichuan flavours. The Sichuan element, at the end of the day, is relatively milder, which stays true to the original outlet in Hong Kong.

Will I Return Again? Overall, I had a good meal at Ju Xing Home and this is definitely a new Chinese restaurant worth checking out in Orchard Road. There is a good mix of spicy and non-spicy dishes so even if you are not big on Sichuan flavours, you will likely still find a favourite dish here.

This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
