Former Jefferson County health commissioner pleads guilty, faces fines and probation

Former Jefferson County Health Commissioner Nicole Balakos was in court Friday morning for charges dating back to 2021 and her time as the county health commissioner.

Balakos was indicted by the Jefferson County Grand Jury in March 2023 and was facing charges, including one count of having unlawful interest in a public contract.

The health department terminated her contract in September 2020. The charge is a fourth-degree felony.

During Friday’s plea, Balakos plead guilty and will be facing fines and a restriction on holding elected positions or offices, all of which were a part of Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr.’s ruling.

“A $250 fine, a $25 probation supervision fee to the probation department,” Bruzzese told the court. “Commit no crimes, violate no laws.”

Friday’s ruling has Balakos facing 90 days of probation along with those monetary fines and she will not be allowed to hold public office for three years.
