NICEVILLE — Middle school students from Okaloosa County showcased their artistic talents in the 2024 Art in the Capitol Competition, a statewide visual arts event highlighting the creativity of sixth- through eighth-graders.
The voluntary competition invites young artists to submit their work for the chance to have it displayed in the Florida Capitol during the 2025 legislative session. A panel of elementary and high school art teachers evaluated 14 entries from Okaloosa County students.
This year’s winners include:
- Best of Show: Drake Harris, Ruckel Middle School
- First Place: McKenzie Winger, Shoal River Middle School
- Second Place: Sophia Perez, Shoal River Middle School
- Third Place: Isabella Welling, Ruckel Middle School
Harris, whose piece earned Best of Show, will have his artwork displayed in the Florida Capitol representing Okaloosa County during the legislative session.
“We are so proud of the creativity and talent demonstrated by these young artists,” Superintendent Marcus Chambers said in a news release. “Their artwork reflects their dedication and passion and serves as a testament to the strength of the arts in Okaloosa County Schools. Congratulations to our winners for this well-deserved recognition.”
