France-China: joint statement on artificial intelligence, more dialogue to reduce risks

China and France want to deepen dialogue on the global governance of artificial intelligence, in order to fully exploit its opportunities and reduce its risks. This is what we learn from the joint declaration signed by the presidents Xi Jinping ed Emmanuel Macron, who met yesterday at the Elysée, in Paris, to discuss the future development of bilateral relations and the main international dossiers, above all Ukraine and the Middle East. Xi and Macron have reached ten agreements on the use of artificial intelligence, “which must serve public interests” and whose development “must respect the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter”.

China and France believe in strengthening international cooperation to bridge the digital divide between countries, recognizing its potential to achieve sustainable development goals. The document reaffirms the importance of discussion on artificial intelligence also to guarantee the necessary protection of personal data and user rights. China and France, for their part, are “fully committed” to promoting artificial intelligence systems that are “safe, reliable and trustworthy”, and welcome the international community’s efforts to secure related applications .
