Nevada Museum of Art acquires 2 collections of artworks

The Nevada Musuem of Art announced on Jan. 23 that as part of its ongoing $60 million expansion project, it has acquired two major gifts of artworks for its permanent collection. Seattle-based collectors Robert Kaplan and Margaret Levi have donated 72 paintings from their contemporary Australian Aboriginal art collection. Judith Lowry and Brad Croul have donated 120 contemporary Native-American pieces, including work by Jean LaMarr, the celebrated Susanville, California printmaker whose retrospective the museum showed in 2021-22. Lowry is a well-known Indigenous painter, storyteller, and activist of Hammawi Band Pit River, Mountain Maidu, Washoe, Scots-Irish descent.

2024 Scholastic Art Award recipients announced

On Jan. 22, the Nevada Museum of Art announced the Northern Nevada Scholastic Art Awards winners. Five Northern Nevada students have been selected as American Visions Nominees: Anastasia Treadway (Grade 9, Sage Ridge School), Cali Surtees (Grade 12, Reno High School), Kellan Pendola (Grade 12, Douglas High School), Jordan Hoffman (Grade 12, Douglas High School), and Dasha Derevianko (Grade 12, Galena High School). These students are eligible to compete at the National level, the results of which will be announced in June 2024. Additionally, a total of 567 Northern Nevada students in grades 7-12 have been recognized for their work. The full list is here.

City of Las Vegas hiring a gallery assistant 

The City of Las Vegas is accepting applications for the position of Public Art and Gallery Assistant. Duties include technical and administrative tasks in support of the City’s Visual Arts programming unit. This is a part-time, hourly position. The rate is $18/hour. Details here.
