From Barnyard To Berghain: Fashion’s Next Big Thing Is A Horse Turned DJ

She has quite a severe overbite and a doe-like stare. Her legs are long and lean, and her feet have become round and calloused with age. That is because horsegiirL, the Berlin-based DJ, producer and ascendent fashion model, is a horse. At least, that is what I am obligated to write. Prior to our conversation, horsegiirL’s team asked me to sign an “NDNeigh” that would restrict me from asking serious, journalistic questions about this musician’s provenance and distinct biological make-up. It helps, then, that this “horse” has been bewitched with the ability to communicate in faultless English.

“I’m just a girlie from the barn,” horsegiirL says, through what I presume is voice-altering software. “I’ve actually been famous for a while, but mainly within the animal kingdom. I’ve been making music and singing at country shows for quite a long time, you see. My transition into the human arena started about a year ago, when I was discovered at a harvest festival by a famous pop singer called Whitney Horseton. It’s all happened so quickly since then.” This chance encounter has resulted in her performing at Berghain, The Cause, Boiler Room and Marc Jacobs afterparties.

Equine appearance aside, horsegiirL has developed a catalogue of anthemic floor-fillers. Some of her biggest hits centre on pastoral isolation and forbidden farmyard love; see “My Barn My Rules”, “Pegasus” and “My Little White Pony”. It is all so stupid, which is what makes it so smart. To see a (real-life) horse twiddle the knobs on a turntable is a delirious experience. The fact that she happens to be dressed in Jean Paul Gaultier corsets and four-fingered Avavav boots while doing it has fast made her a cult figure within the fashion industry. “I always loved getting dressed up for competitions and getting my hair done,” she says. “That’s where I met one of Stella McCartney’s horses. And, ugh, I’m happy for her… but she wasn’t the kindest to me back then.”

Here, horsegiirL sets the record straight about her journey from barnyard to Berghain, fashion’s problematic relationship with animal rights, and the many crickets she counts as fans.

Hi horsegiirL! How would you like to introduce yourself to readers?

I’m just a girlie from the barn that is increasingly enjoying city life and the world of fashion. I’ve actually been famous for a while, but mainly within the animal kingdom. I’ve been making music and singing at country shows for quite a long time, you see. My transition onto more human stages started when I was discovered at this farm festival by a really famous pop singer called Whitney Horseton. It’s all happened so quickly since then. Travelling has exposed me to so many different people and I’ve come to realise that I actually love dressing up! And that it’s okay to wear things that aren’t practical.

How has your style evolved with fame?

Growing up, we always had lots of cool saddles and hairstyles, depending on which human looked after us. I always loved getting dressed up for competitions and getting my hair done. But, because I was so young, I obviously just wore my fur coat a lot. I think I was always a bit jealous of cows, to be honest, because they have so many cool variations of outfits they’re born into. And zebras! They’re so fab. They’re like the horses of the savanna.
