FUEL Wellness + Nutrition | Zero Proofing It Through the Alcohol Free For 40 Challenge


NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — We’re in the second week of the 9th annual #AlcoholFreeFor40 challenge, with the goal of going 40 days alcohol free, tracking certain labs and physical metrics pre- and post-challenge making it your own self experiment to truly see the impact of giving up alcohol, inside and out.

But simply because a drink is “zero proof” doesn’t mean it’s necessarily good for us. In this week’s FUELED Wellness + Nutrition, bar expert Ethan Skaggs joins us to share recipe and product tips for zero-proofing our way through the Alcohol Free For 40 Challenge, the Eat Fit way.

RECIPE adapted from Craft: The Eat Fit Guide to Zero Proof Cocktails

El Espiritu Rita | vegan, low carb 

Makes 1 serving

Ingredients:

  • 1 lime wedge, to rim glass
  • Sea salt, to rim glass
  • 2 ounces Ritual zero proof tequila 
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice mixed with generous pinch of orange zest
  • 1/2 tablespoon Eat Fit approved simple syrup    
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice   
  • 2 slices fresh jalapeño, reserve 1 slice for garnish  
  • Ice – preferably single large cube
  • Lime wheel (grilled or torched), for garnish   
  • Bamboo pick   

Instructions:

Rim half of your glass of choice by running the lime wedge along the edge, then dip into salt. Shake off any excess before adding the drink. 

Combine all liquid ingredients and one slice of jalapeño in a small shaker with ice. Shake and double strain over ice cube into glass. Garnish with a jalapeno slice and a grilled lime wheel layered on bamboo pick.  

Per serving: 10 calories, 4 grams net carbs, 1 gram sugar (0 added sugar)
