Fun events to check out in Vancouver this weekend: March 22-24


The Metro Vancouver weather forecast includes several dreary days and at least one organized rainstorm. 

Thankfully, there are plenty of fun, indoor events to check out each day over the weekend. 

You can check out a couple of unique dance events, including a performance by R3HAB and a glow-in-the-dark dance party.

There are also some interesting plays, including one about the first Black actor to play Shakespeare’s Othello. 

Need something repaired? There’s an event for that, too. The Repair Café will guide you through fixes at the Trout Lake Community Centre.

Here are the “don’t miss” events in Vancouver this weekend:

R3HAB

Dutch-Morrocan DJ Fadil El Ghoul, who performs under the stage name “R3HAB,” will play a show in Vancouver on Saturday, March 23. He is known for captivating remixes of popular hits from artists such as Rihanna, Drake, Taylor Swift, and Calvin Harris.

When: Saturday, March 23, from 10 p.m. – 3 a.m.

Where: Harbour Event & Convention Centre – 760 Pacific Blvd.

Vancouver International Auto Show

The Vancouver International Autoshow is Western Canada’s largest automotive event showcasing the latest brands in automotive, electric and hybrid vehicles. Attendees can test drive multiple clean energy vehicles, check out commercial vendors, and see surprise activations.

When: Thursday, March 21 through Sunday, March 24

Where: Vancouver Convention Centre (West Building — 1055 Canada Pl.

Carousel Theatre for Young People presents: It’s Okay to Be Different

A diverse cast will use an “innovative approach to puppetry” and “playful original music” to bring Todd Parr’s children’s stories to life. The author has written and illustrated over 71 books for children exploring important topics using his trademark blend of “playfulness and sensitivity. 

It’s Okay to Be Different cleverly delivers the important messages of acceptance, understanding, and self-confidence,” explains the show listing.

Côté Danse’s X (Dix)

Choreographed by Guillaume Côté, the Principal Dancer with The National Ballet of Canada, DanceHouse presents Côté Danse at the Vancouver Playhouse.

The production features five dancers and is inspired by the myth of Odysseus. The dancers delve deep into the “idea of an inner compass” and explore the concept of home as a site “of comfort, stability and foundational identity.”

When: Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23

Father Tartuffe: An Indigenous Misadventure

Described as a new take on a timeless comedy, the play shows a man who comes into some money from his job with Expo 67 and is living well. 

“But when the gullible patriarch welcomes the con artist Father Tartuffe into their home, his relatives must rally together to save themselves from the imposter’s conniving ways,” describes the show listing.

When: Daily through Sunday, March 24 (various showtimes)

Red Velvet

Red Velvet is the story of the first Black actor to play Shakespeare’s Othello in 1833. 

“As the public and parliament debate the abolition of slavery, how will audiences react to the revolution already taking place on the stage?” 

Attendees will journey to the “tempestuous Covent Garden rehearsal hall” in the “little-known true story” of the groundbreaking performer.

When: Recurring daily through April 21

Bolly Holly – Holi Edition

Celebrate Holi, the Hindu holiday of love, colours, and spring, with a glow-in-the-dark party at The Library Square. 

The celebration will have a “twist of Bollywood EDM” for a night of music and dancing. Guests are encouraged to rock glowing and colourful attire and be ready to dance the night away.

When: Sunday, March 24 at 10 p.m. 

Where: The Library Square Pub – 300 West Georgia St

Repair Café – Trout Lake Community Centre

The Society Promoting Environmental Conservation (SPEC) in partnership with the City of Vancouver offers monthly free community repair cafes.

Attendees can block out half-hour slots with volunteers to repair everything select electronics, small appliances, clothing, bicycles, and more. The group does not accept printers, shoes, bags, luggage, furniture or large appliances.

The volunteers may ask you to get involved in the physical repair of your item so that you learn how to do it and can make future repairs. 

When: Sunday, March 24, from 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 pm.

Where: Trout Lake Community Centre – 3360 Victoria Dr.
