GasBuddy predicts record summer travel ahead of Memorial Day

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — GasBuddy has predicted that more people will be hitting the road during the summer travel season.

According to GasBuddy’s Summer Travel Survey, 76% of Americans plan to make a road trip sometime between Memorial Day and Labor Day. This is up 18% from 2023.

The average traveler plans to make two road trips, with 49% expected to drive longer than five hours to reach their destination.

Of the major travel holidays, GasBuddy’s survey shows that 60% of travelers will make a trip for Memorial Day, 45% for the Fourth of July and 34% for Labor Day.

GasBuddy predicted that it expects the average gas price across the U.S. to remain in the mid-$3 range, with the national average being about $3.58 a gallon between Memorial Day and Labor Day. However, GasBuddy also predicts that many will see prices drop below $3 in the next several months.

“It looks like it’ll be a busy start to the summer driving season, and while Americans gripe about the cost of gasoline, it doesn’t seem that too many are going to be deterred from hitting the road,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Great news for those who are planning to travel: Motorists are likely to see more stations lowering prices to $2.99 per gallon or less as the summer wears on, and refiners ramp up output after finishing maintenance.”

To save at the pump this summer, GasBuddy encourages travelers to use the GasBuddy app to find the cheapest gas along their travel route. And to consider which side of state lines to get gas in due to different taxes affecting the price.
