Georgia men’s basketball struggles to find rhythm in loss to Providence

Georgia men’s basketball faced Providence for the final matchup in the Baha Mar Hoops Convention, where the team lost its second game of the tournament 71-64.

Georgia again struggled to generate offense. The Bulldogs shot just 38% from the field and only made six of their 19 three-point attempts.

“I liked our competitiveness here against two really good teams,” said head coach Mike White. “We did a lot of good things today, but we have to be better about our offensive connection.”

Guard Noah Thomasson led Georgia in scoring with 19 points, but did so shooting just seven-of-21 from the floor. RJ Melendez had 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

After his standout performance against Miami, Blue Cain struggled to land shots against Providence, missing all five of his field goal attempts. Fellow guard Justin Hill also struggled off the bench, shooting three-for-11.

The first half was a shot-for-shot battle between the two teams, with the lead changing hands five times before the half was over. Georgia trailed 30-25 with just over three minutes left in the first half before a 9-2 run put the Bulldogs up 34-32 at the half.

Neither team was able to pull away in the second half. Providence led for most of the half, but was never ahead by more than six points until the final seconds. Georgia hung around and made it a one-point game with 48 seconds left, but Providence made its free throws and Georgia was unable to answer with a quick two. The Friars finally shut the door in the closing seconds and won 71-64.

“This is as hard as the Georgia team has played all season,” White said. “I loved our effort, but we just struggled to score down the stretch.”
