Georgia tennis’ Alexandra Vecic advances to round of 16 in Macon 80K

Georgia women’s tennis’ Alexandra Vecic advanced to the singles main draw round of 16 on day three of the Macon 80K tournament in Macon, Georgia on Oct. 18 at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center.

The sophomore is the lone Bulldog competing in this tournament, and has started off strong in the first qualifying round. No. 5 seeded Vecic defeated opponent Jaeda Daniel in straight sets. Vecic had a dominant first set, besting Daniel 6-1, and won the second set 6-4.

In the second round of the qualifying draw, Vecic will face Chelsea Fontenel from Arizona State, who defeated Melany Solange Krywoj. Fontenel won a first close set 7-6 (3) against Krywoj, and ultimately clinched the match 6-3.

Vecic, a sophomore from Singen, Germany, then faced No. 7 seed Julia Riera. In the first set, Riera kept the score close, but Vecic ultimately prevailed and won 7-6(6). In the second set, Vecic also had to fight for a win. Looking to advance to the round of 16, Vecic and Riera rallied back and forth, with Vecic defeating her opponent 7-6(3).

This win comes after Vecic’s loss at the ITF Florence 25K tournament against Whitney Osuigwe in the main draw quarterfinals.

In the round of 16, Vecic will face wild card Alexa Noel from the University of Miami. The winner of that match will advance to the quarterfinals.

The Georgia women’s tennis team also competed in the ITA Southeast Regional Championships beginning on Oct. 19.
