The Georgia women’s tennis team was supposed to host ITA Kickoff Weekend at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Jan. 26-27, that is until the weather and construction got in the way.

The match between the Gamecocks and No. 4 Bulldogs was moved to Clemson, South Carolina with a spot to the ITA National Women’s Indoor Championship on the line.

The Gamecocks’ duo of Ayana Akli and Olympe Lancelot took down the No. 15 duo of Guillermina Grant and Mai Nirundorn on court one 6-1 to get things started.

But the Bulldogs responded as the No. 58 duo of Dasha Vidmanova and Aysegul Mert defeated Sarah Hamner and Misa Malkin 6-3 on court two.

Alexandra Vecic and Mell Reasco finished off the doubles point for Georgia, defeating Shahar Biran and Elise Mills 6-3 on court three to give Georgia a 1-0 advantage.

“We came out firing,” head coach Drake Bernstein said. “Our doubles has been steadily improving, especially in the last month here. I’m just happy with the way we competed down the stretch.”

No. 70 Anastasiia Lopata kept the momentum going for the Bulldogs, defeating Malkin 6-2, 6-2 on court four to take a commanding 2-0 lead on the Gamecocks.

No. 6 Akli pulled South Carolina back into the fold with a convincing 7-5, 6-4 win over No. 35 Vecic to cut the lead to 2-1 Georgia.

No. 108 Nirundorn responded though, taking another straight sets win for the Bulldogs 7-5, 6-2 on court six against Lancelot. This win put the Bulldogs one point away from a ticket to Washington, going up 3-1.

No. 116 Reasco finished the job for Georgia, going the distance against No. 76 Biran 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 to give Georgia a 4-1 victory over their SEC rivals.

Two matches were left undecided, with the Bulldogs’ No. 30 Vidmanova up on No. 4 Hamner 3-6, 6-4, 3-2 on court two and Grant up on the Gamecocks’ Mills 7-6, 4-6, 2-0 on court five.

The top-15 schools from 2023 were able to host Kickoff Weekend matches on Friday and Saturday, with the winners of the four-team tournaments getting a spot in the Indoor Championship — one spot is reserved for the host, the University of Washington. The tournament will start on Feb. 9 and will run until Feb. 12.

Georgia’s next match will be on Feb. 4 against Texas in Austin, Texas. Afterwards, the ITA Indoor Championship is on deck for the women’s team.
